70th BARNSTAPLE CARNIVAL 2016
17th September 2016
WHAT IS BARNSTAPLE CARNIVAL?
Established since 1931
Barnstaple Fair Carnival has been held in the town since 1931 and has run for 70 consecutive years this year. Barnstaple Fair, operated by the Showman’s Guide of Great Britain, is the largest in the West Country and it is tradition for the Carnival to follow this event.
The Fair proclamation, held at the Guildhall, on the Wednesday prior to the Carnival, this year 14th September, is a prestigious event attended by the Mayor, Town Clerk, Chief Executive of North Devon council, the Chief of Police and many other dignitaries as well as representatives from local businesses and organisations.
The Fair runs from 14th – 17th September inclusive, and the Carnival being held on Saturday 17th September 2016 usually attracts up to 20,000 people. The Carnival is organised by a small Committee of volunteers and is a registered charity.
