Volunteer for Barnstaple Carnival 2017!
Thank you to all our incredible volunteers that support Barnstaple Fair Carnival every year!
We’re lucky enough to have amazing people from all over North Devon who donate their time to keep our wheels turning! Without them, we just couldn’t continue!
There are lots of benefits to volunteering and supporting a cause for your local community! Whether it’s confidence building, expanding your experience or just to see how we do things!
Whatever your skill set or reason for joining us, you can expect to have great fun and work with great people!
Who Can Volunteer?
Anyone can volunteer and you don’t need any qualifications or prior training.
For students and young people, we ask that you’re 16 or over and in school year 11. You’ll also need a parent or guardian’s permission.
Community groups, schools, colleges, youth clubs and other organisations are also welcome to volunteer! In this case, we’ll ask for a liaison with your organisation and begin guiding you through the short process.
We believe that everybody should have the right to help and support Barnstaple Fair Carnival, no matter what their background or origin. As such, we’re happy to be as flexible as possible to fit around you. Just let us know what you need and we’ll do our best to make it happen!
What Can I Do?
At a senior level, we have experienced volunteers fulfilling roles such as administration, radio communications, traffic management, public relations, personnel support and many more!
On the street, however, we rely on volunteers to ensure that we provide the best and safest carnival possible. Our main role is street stewarding and comprises two segments:
- Static Stewards form part of a front-line team, working with the crowds on the street. As a static steward, you’ll deliver information to spectators and participants alike, helping the smoothing running of the event in a key role!
- Mobile Stewards support the “boots on the ground”. You’ll provide crowd control support and assist Static Stewards where needed most! This could be navigating articulated lorries through narrow streets or providing hydration to those on shift!
What about times & dates?
Barnstaple Carnival is held, by tradition, the Saturday following Barnstaple Fair. This makes it Saturday 16th September. Key timings throughout the day can be found under the ‘Route and Times’ tab of this website.
We ask that you can attend a short introduction session at 4pm on Carnival Day and be available for at least a further 2 hours for the main event. We’ll pass you more details about this nearer the time.
