General
We do wish to keep everyone safe at Barnstaple Carnival and so would ask you to abide by our ‘Code of Conduct’.
Photography:
- Barnstaple Fair Carnival Committee will have one designated photographer for the event. However, the event is in the public domain so please be aware that images and sound recordings of participating children will be made by varying forms of media by others present at the Children’s and Main Carnival.
- By entering the Main Carnival, you agree that participant(s) are permitted to have photographs (and other forms of images and media taken) for publicity purposes, used at the discretion of the Barnstaple Carnival Committee.
Assembly Area:
- Please check in with the Marshalls at Taw Vale.
Toilets:
- Toilets will be available at the Cattle Market, Pannier Market, Barnstaple Museum and Pilton Causeway.
Collection tins:
- Only official collection tins/buckets with Barnstaple Carnival stickers on are to be used.
- Once you have checked in with a Marshall, collection tins/buckets can be obtained from the designated area on The Square.
- All money collected is the property of Barnstaple Carnival until specifically designated to nominated charities.
- All collecting buckets/tins MUST be handed in at the end of the Procession. Once counted the Committee will return a percentage of the collection to those charities nominated by Carnival participants.
These simple rules are in place for the safety of all participants.

Procession entries
We do wish to keep everyone safe at Barnstaple Carnival and so would ask you to abide by our ‘Code of Conduct’.
All Entrants:
- ALL entrants must keep moving forward during the procession.
- No alcohol (the organisers reserve the right to disqualify any float where there is evidence of alcohol misuse).
Vehicle Entrants:
- All vehicles must be roadworthy (i.e. Tax, MOT, Insurance and a qualified driver).
- No person is to ride on the float either to or from the procession area.
- Restraints should be used in all cases where the participants are moving on the float and /or where there is no side rail.
- Children under the age of 3 yrs. are not permitted to ride on the float without adult supervision at all times.
- Side and rear safety rails are strongly recommended.
- Vehicles must be insured and roadworthy (please bring relevant insurance documents for towing vehicle/lorry).
- No missiles or water to be thrown from floats.
- Participants MUST NOT jump on /off the float during the procession.
- Entries must notify Barnstaple Carnival if exceeding 16ft in height.
- Stewards must accompany each vehicle.
- Please display a sign saying “No coins are to be thrown at the float”.
Walking Entrants:
- No missiles or water to be thrown by the participants.
- All props to be under control at all times and pose no risk to participants or spectators.
- No alcohol (the organisers reserve the right to disqualify any entrant where there is evidence of alcohol misuse).
Child Entrants:
- Each child / Children to be accompanied by an adult known to them who will be responsible for their care and control.
- All participating children up to the age of 3 years are to wear age appropriate safety reins.
These simple rules are in place for the safety of all participants.
